Day Three Tuesday
Lusaka/Chilanga ICA/Lower Zambezi
Driven Shooting/Game Viewing
Our second day of shooting will again mean an early morning start and charter flight, although this time we will be on our way to the Chizombi Game Reserve shoot of Rod Sales and the neighbouring Mkalankanga shoot, over the Chowa and Munkunda farms, of the attractive Weatherley family. It is the Sales, the Weatherleys and the Jacobs families, who, with the Johnsons, make up the complement of the Gamebirds’ association’s private estates in this superbly managed and conserved forty thousand acre farming and wildlife area in central Zambia.
So our second day of all wild bird driven shooting contains most of the same assets as the first day, yet differs in that we will now be shooting through rather thicker, more tangled, habitat. In this area of thousands of acres of indigenous bush we will see lots of kudu, bushbuck, reedbuck, impala, bushpig, etc. as we move about during the day some being trophy quality animals. (Huntable on these estates by prior arrangement) And 300+ species of indigenous bushveld birds to see, given time to do some serious bird watching!
The non-shooter party will breakfast from 8am and then transfer to Lusaka airport. There our Cessna Caravan propjet charter aircraft will be ready to fly them (25 mins) directly to Jeki. The flight goes to the east of Lusaka, over the escarpment and down into Jeki, the landing strip in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Met on arrival followed by a game drive to either Kulefu or Chiawa Lodge. This hour long drive has often produced a pride of lion or some hunting dogs and/or herds of buffalo/elephant. On arrival settle in and freshen up before lunch on the verandah of the lodge, overlooking the great river flowing eastwards towards Moçambique and the Indian Ocean. After lunch and a nap, either afternoon and evening game drives, or game and bird watching or fishing for Tiger Fish from boats on the Zambezi.
For the guns the day will follow much the same lines as that of the Johnson’s shoot, with several early morning drives followed by the traditional tea and snack mid morning. Depending on how our hosts have arranged the day, we will either shoot the morning over the Weatherley’s ground, followed by the afternoon over Rod Sales’ shoot. Or, of course, vice a versa.
The refreshments break will be followed by more drives before we take lunch in Rod Sales’ most attractive private game lodge, overlooking a waterhole set in a clearing surrounded by thick game country bushveld. Following lunch, two drives in the afternoon. We expect the afternoon drives to show the guns some unusually presented, particularly amusing birds. Amongst the game birds we anticipate challenging us during the day, and for which we should be ready, will be the handsome Rednecked Spurfowl. A lovely game bird requiring a quick swing and snap shot!.
After the shoot the guns fly in our charter propjet Cessna Caravan to Jeki in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Evening game viewing drive on the way to Kulefu or Chiawa Lodge where they meet up with the non-shooter party. Drinks, dinner and overnight Lodge. (All inclusive).
