Day One

Capital Park, Pretoria/Mafikeng
Train/Westwards
By mid morning it will be time to leave our hotels and transfer, with all luggage, to Pretoria. There we gather at the special new Capital Park Station complex of Rovos Rail and move aboard the Rovos Rail Train,The Pride of Africa”, for departure. The whistle blows and we steam south and west, hopefully drawn by the huge, beautifully restored, 19 Class Steam Loco named "Marjorie" (after train owner Rohan Vos's much loved mother) and head for the historic Boer War battlefield and frontier ranching town of Mafikeng, in North West Province.

As we board the Train, over a long red carpet, a champagne cocktail will be served by the ever attentive Rovos Rail staff. The four course lunch, served on board, will give us our first opportunity to experience the fine cuisine and outstanding wine cellar of this our superbly elegant home on rails for the next six days. This is the style and pace of travel as it was in the best of Africa’s colonial era, now with all the time in the world to enjoy it again!

Traveling westwards, through the remainder of the afternoon, during which traditional English afternoon tea will be served at 4pm. in the Observation (Lounge) Car, we proceed into the setting sun. At 7pm gather in the lounge car for cocktails, canapés and an introduction, by the Game birds staff who will be traveling with the group, to the days of shooting and touring that lie ahead. They will introduce to you the GAMEBIRDS family of private estate shoots that you will be visiting during your safari, the wildlife research, conservation projects and the considerable progress made with developing the populations of indigenous wild African game birds that you will see whilst shooting over their properties

Dinner at 8pm. (We suggest a jacket and tie or elegantly casual dress) as we travel the remainder of our journey to Mafikeng, and from there on to Mareetsane. The Train will be standing still from about midnight onwards, which should ensure that all get a good night’s sleep for the first night of the Train-Shoot Safari. Overnight Train.
