Tuesday
Kimberley/Kalahari Desert/Vaal & Harts Rivers
Flighted Shooting
Tea and toast, after an early rise, and transfer by minibus to the Kimberley airport. Meet up with our pilots and take-off at 06hrs30, in our corporate twin propjet, to fly for about an hour (depends on wind) into the Northern Cape’s Kalahari Desert. (Tea, coffee and snacks to be served on the flight).
We are met on arrival and drive the short distance to our morning of Namaqua Sand grouse shooting, where we are guests on 10,000 hectares of private conservation area belonging to Gamebirds association members the Botha family. After drawing numbers and being shown to our butts (blinds) situated around, but at some distance from, the waterhole, we can expect the first of the birds to appear quite soon after we are in place and settled. By 11hrs00 the grouse will have completed their morning flight so we can then spend time picking-up and inspecting the bag. Thence to enjoy a well-earned relaxing brunch, at the Botha’s nearby farmhouse.
Please note: If the sand grouse migrate from our areas in the latter stages of our shooting season we will replace the morning of sand grouse with flighted dove and pigeon, in harvested fields, on the same estate as the afternoon’s waterfowl.
Then, in the afternoon, the guns travel by air to a wetland area, on the property of Kit and Val Thompson, associated with the Vaal-Harts river irrigation systems. The Thompson’s began wetland conservation management programmes some years ago, with the result that they now have a pristine area producing considerable numbers of waterfowl each year. Here we will flight incoming Spurwing and Egyptian Geese, African Shelduck and lines of both Yellow billed Duck and Red billed Teal, silhouetted against the orange sky of the setting sun. We will finish shooting as dark closes in.
Then it will be 90 minutes of comfortable road transfer back to Kimberley and the excellent hospitality of the Edgerton Lodge for a late dinner and overnight. (All inclusive)
THE SAFARI CONTINUES: PLEASE CONTACT US FOR FULL DETAILS
